Wireless networks

Wireless networks are the future – not just in connection with computers or Bluetooth technology for mobile phones, but also in connection to different sensors and other technical devices. However, it is a necessity in this connection to consider the energy consumption of the network – otherwise, the expenses and environmental strain may rapidly counteract the advantages of a potential heightened level of efficiency.

At CISS, we work on developing sensors that are self-sufficient in terms of energy. As the sensors are wireless, we need to work on using alternative forms of energy – e.g. solar cell energy or energy generated by temperature differences in the sensor’s surroundings. With time, it is our hope that we can develop sensors so cheap and reliable that they can be used in ordinary companies and homes and for outdoors environmental surveillance and other similar tasks.

Case story:

In 2005, CISS took part in a collaboration with BLIP Systems, N’volve and the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University in connection with an experiment concerning user-focused information by use of Bluetooth technology. The experiment took place in connection with the conference International Wireless Summit and was aimed at providing the participants with the exact information - e.g. tourist information or information about changes in the conference schedule – that the participants might need during the conference.

Control your computer - using your tongue
One of the severest possible after-effects of a traffic accident is getting a spinal cord injury. In the US, almost a quarter of a million people are paraplegics, while in Denmark the number is ‘only’ 3,000. About half of these are tetraplegics – which means that they are paralysed from the neck down. These people need assistance for everything.
